Have you taken reflexology at weSPARK yet?
weSPARK is a non-profit organization in Los Angeles that offers free healing and therapeutic services for cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones. Our services include yoga, acupuncture, qi gong, tai chi, reiki, hypnotherapy and a variety of support groups for caregivers as well as cancer patients. One of our most popular programs is reflexology. Reflexology is a natural non-invasive, complementary approach to stress reduction performed by applying specific pressure and touch techniques to certain areas of the body. It can also help improve your health by boosting your body’s own healing abilities!
I recently took reflexology with one of our certified reflexology facilitators, Diane Hubner, who brought along her amazing therapy dog, Zeus! Before the session, Diane explained to me that the idea behind reflexology is that having your feet pressed and massaged in a certain way improves the function of corresponding organs, glands and other parts of the body. This practice can also help induce relaxation and alleviate stress, anxiety and pain.
Diane begins by massaging the hands first, pressing firmly down with her thumb, and guiding her hand and fingers up and down on the hand. Then, she proceeds to massage the feet, pressing firmly on the soles as she works her way around the ankles. Applying pressure, she glides her thumb across the foot loosening all of the ligaments and muscles surrounding the joints of the foot for a deep relaxing effect. Implementing breathing techniques is also encouraged as it allows you to stay present and in the moment, leaving you fully immersed in this relaxing environment. It is no surprise that after taking reflexology, our guests leave feeling positive, with their moods lifted and with a feeling of general well being.
